Innovative concept of a smart crop water stress meter with machine learning data processing

Project objective
To develop and test in real conditions a prototype meter that detects, contactlessly and from a thermal image of the crop, when plants are short of water. Such a device allows irrigation based on the plants’ actual needs and saves water in greenhouse and polytunnel production.
Activities carried out
The project produced a prototype meter and a test line in a greenhouse, carried out a measurement campaign on six crops and developed a machine learning method for processing the data. Implementation ended on 30 June 2026.
The project was funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, under Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021–2026.
